Professionals who have shown mastery of the LEED rating system are designated "LEED Accredited Professionals" or "LEED APs." This certification ensures that experts know all aspects of green building and can guide a project through the LEED certification process.
After 2009, professionals pursuing LEED certification faced more stringent requirements. Before 2009, all that was required to become a LEED Accredited Professional was to pass a two-hour multiple-choice exam on either the LEED for New Construction or LEED for Commercial Interiors certification systems, according to Keith McGlamery's article "Major Changes Ahead for LEED APs" published in National Real Estate Investor. If you passed the exam, you were awarded the title of LEED Accredited Professional without having to do any more research.
Since 2009, when acquiring and keeping that certificate became more complex, LEED certification has grown in importance in the sector. There have been two levels of accreditation since then. A LEED Green Associate understands LEED certification procedures generally but does not need technical participation or expertise. The LEED Accredited Professional Plus, also known as the LEED Accredited Professional Plus with a Specialty, is an alternative certification.
