The film may appeal to a strong cast led by two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank. In words, the role of an alcoholic journalist investigating the murder of her own son sounds interesting. In fact, the talented actress has almost nothing to work with - her storyline is hardly the most boring. Instead of an exciting journalistic investigation, the heroine almost all the time drowns her sorrow in a bottle. Another great review film about a mother and her son.
The search for the killer is rather engaged in a pregnant lover of the deceased, played by a young British actress Olivia Cooke. Perhaps, her movements on the screen are the most interesting to watch. The trinity of main characters is closed by the character of Jack Reynor - an ambitious police officer who promises his mother to find his brother's killer. It's a pity that the star of "Solstice" does not use his potential to the full, although the role, it would seem, obliges. Nevertheless, "Mother's Wrath" is a rare chance to see the favourites on the big screens. The Good Mother combines elements of a sharp detective story, a crime thriller and a family drama. The problem is that the authors, it seems, have not decided which direction is leading. In the end, there is too predictable a denouement for a detective, not enough suspense for a thriller, and too little emotion for a drama. The components don't work individually and don't add up to a cohesive opus either.
Although the film had a lot of potential, the result is a rather passable film that doesn't stand up to any comparison with exemplary genre hits. Mother's Wrath itself doesn't invent anything new, doesn't surprise and fails to hold the viewer's attention. An hour and a half is a relatively small timekeeping for the detective genre, but here every minute stretches endlessly.
